How to Choose the Right Fence for Your Texas Property

A good fence does more than mark a property line. It adds privacy, security, and curb appeal, and in Texas it has to stand up to heat, storms, and shifting soil. Here is how to choose the right one.
Start With Your Goal
The best material depends on what you want the fence to do:
- Privacy and warmth point to a wood privacy fence, usually cedar, at six feet tall.
- Security and budget favor chain link, which is durable and low maintenance.
- Curb appeal with security is where ornamental metal shines, especially for front yards and commercial frontage.
Wood Privacy Fences
Cedar is the go-to in our area because it resists rot and looks great. The keys to a wood fence that lasts are concrete-set posts, proper rail spacing, and quality hardware. A cap and trim board gives a finished look and protects the tops of the pickets from weather.
Chain Link
Chain link is the most cost-effective choice for backyards, pet containment, and commercial sites. Galvanized or vinyl-coated systems hold up for decades when the posts are set in concrete and the fabric is properly tensioned.
Ornamental Metal
Steel and aluminum panel fencing combines strength with a refined look. Powder-coated finishes resist rust, and the open design keeps sightlines clear while still securing the property.
Don’t Skip the Footings
In Texas soil, posts that are not set in concrete will lean within a season or two. Proper footings, plumb posts, and the right gate hardware are what separate a fence that lasts from one you replace in a few years.
